At what size does fleet rating start?
Most carriers treat 5–9 units as small-fleet (unit-rated) and 10+ as fleet (composite-rated). We'll quote you both ways once you cross 8 units so you can compare.
Fleet
Composite-rated, telematics-friendly fleet programs — built for operators with 10+ power units.
Once a trucking or contracting operation crosses about 10 units, the right insurance carrier changes. Riskara works with carriers that composite-rate larger fleets (one negotiated rate per unit class), offer telematics discounts, and bundle in loss-control services. We help operations from 10 to 100+ units find that program and stay in it.
Smaller fleets are priced per unit and per driver. Once you cross ~10 units, larger carriers will composite-rate — a blended rate per power unit that flexes as you add or drop equipment. Composite rating is usually cheaper at scale and easier to administer.
Nirvana and a handful of other carriers price fleet insurance using telematics data — speed, hard braking, hours of service, dashcam footage. If your drivers run clean, your rate drops. We can place fleets on telematics programs and read the data with you to push the rate down further at renewal.
Large-fleet carriers include loss-control consultations — driver training programs, dashcam reviews, CSA score reduction strategies. We coordinate these between you and the carrier so they actually get used.
For fleet quoting we collect a single spreadsheet of all units (VIN, year, make, GVW, stated value) and a single spreadsheet of all drivers (CDL number, CDL state, hire date, MVR within 12 months). Upload both through our website and we'll handle the rest.

No, but telematics-equipped fleets tend to get the best pricing. If you don't run telematics today, Nirvana and several other carriers will install it as part of binding the policy.
Yes. We commonly write parent-company fleets that include multiple DOT-registered subsidiaries or DBAs on a single policy with named insured schedules.
Upload your unit schedule and driver list — we'll line up composite-rated programs from multiple carriers.
