SR-22

SR-22 insurance for Illinois and Texas

Same-day electronic filing. The filing is included with your policy at no extra fee.

An SR-22 isn't a separate insurance policy — it's a certificate of financial responsibility your auto insurance carrier files with the state on your behalf, confirming you carry the legally required liability limits. Most drivers are ordered to carry one after a DUI/DWI, reckless driving conviction, at-fault accident without insurance, or repeated traffic violations. Riskara files SR-22s electronically with the Illinois Secretary of State and the Texas DPS the day your policy binds.

Who needs an SR-22 in Illinois

Illinois drivers ordered by the Secretary of State or by a court — typically following a DUI conviction, driving without insurance, statutory summary suspension, or three or more moving violations in a 12-month period (for drivers under 21).

Who needs an SR-22 in Texas

Texas drivers ordered by the Department of Public Safety or by a court — typically following a DUI/DWI conviction, driving without proof of financial responsibility, or a serious moving violation that triggers a license suspension.

How long do I need it?

Illinois typically requires SR-22 for 3 years from the date of the qualifying conviction. Texas typically requires 2 years. The state notifies you when the requirement ends; we file SR-26 (cancellation) only when the state confirms in writing or when you instruct us to.

How much does it cost?

The SR-22 filing itself is usually $15–$25, a one-time fee included in your premium. The bigger cost is the underlying auto policy — high-risk drivers often pay more than standard rates, but our AI engine compares non-standard carriers (Progressive, Dairyland, and others) to find the lowest available premium.

Don't let the policy lapse

If your SR-22 policy lapses or cancels, your carrier is required to notify the state, and the state will suspend your license — restarting the clock. Set up auto-pay and keep your address current with the carrier.

SR-22 FAQs

Can I get an SR-22 without owning a vehicle?

Yes. A non-owner SR-22 policy provides liability coverage when you drive someone else's vehicle and satisfies the filing requirement. We write non-owner SR-22 in both IL and TX.

How fast can the filing reach the state?

Same business day. Once your policy binds, the carrier transmits the SR-22 electronically to the Illinois SOS or Texas DPS within hours, and most reinstatements are processed within 1–3 business days.

Will my SR-22 follow me to another state?

If you move, your IL or TX SR-22 obligation often follows you. Tell us your new state and we'll coordinate the filing requirements there. Some carriers can't follow across state lines — we'll switch you to one that can.

Will an SR-22 make my rates go up forever?

No. Once the filing requirement ends and you've maintained continuous coverage, standard-market carriers will write you again at standard rates — typically 3 years for IL, 2 years for TX.
