Commercial pickup truck insurance in IL & TX

When a pickup truck is used for business — not just commuting to a job site, but actively for the business — it needs a commercial auto policy, not personal auto. The vehicles look identical (a F-250 is a F-250) but the underwriting is different and a personal auto carrier will deny a claim if commercial use is established. Riskara writes commercial pickup-truck insurance for contractors, trade fleets, service businesses, and small operations that put their pickups to work daily.

Typical premium range

$1,200–$2,500 per year per pickup (single vehicle, $1M primary liability, $500 deductible physical damage on $50K stated value, local radius). Multi-vehicle fleet rating typically lowers per-unit rates.

Who buys this

  • Plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and other trade contractors
  • Landscaping and lawn-care businesses
  • Construction crew transport (multi-pickup contractor fleets)
  • Repair, maintenance, and service businesses
  • Towing operations using pickup-mounted equipment
  • Mobile-service operators (mechanics, locksmiths, IT field service)

Coverages we write

  • Primary liability ($300K – $1M)
  • Comprehensive and collision (physical damage)
  • Uninsured motorist
  • Hired and non-owned auto (covers employees using personal pickups)
  • General liability — usually bundled into a Business Owners Policy (BOP)
  • Inland marine for tools and equipment in the bed or toolbox
  • On-hook coverage for towing operations

Pickup truck (commercial) insurance FAQ

Can I just keep my personal auto policy if I sometimes use the pickup for work?

Risky. Personal auto policies have business-use exclusions. If you have a claim while the truck is on a job site or being used for paid work, the carrier can deny it. The safer path: commercial auto policy that explicitly covers business use. Premium is higher but the claim path is reliable.

Do I need a separate policy for tools in the truck bed?

Inland marine (also called contractor's tools coverage) is a separate line that covers tools and equipment regardless of where they are — in the truck, at a job site, in storage. It typically isn't included in commercial auto, which only covers the truck itself. Many BOPs bundle inland marine; if yours doesn't, add it.

Multi-pickup contractor fleet — am I better off scheduling each one or composite?

Most small contractor fleets (1–8 pickups) are scheduled individually — each VIN listed with stated value. Larger fleets sometimes shift to composite or symbol-rated coverage. We'll quote both ways once you cross 5 units to see which is cheaper for your specific operation.
